He starts to publicly align with the Nazi party, thinking Germany is the place they truly belong. Margot struggles to find stability as her father’s mental state quickly deteriorates in the camp. However, given everything else going on around her, particularly her mother’s troubling health condition, I suppose figuring out her sexuality is the least of her problems. While it is not explicitly stated, it is hinted at on page that Margot is a lesbian. (Side note: not as many German Americans were sent to camps as Japanese Americans.) She is a shy, analytical thinker that likes making lists. Margot’s father was brought to Crystal City because he, unknowingly, went to a Nazi party meeting at a friend’s invitation. But nothing felt fully explained or fleshed out.Īs for Margot and Haruko, while they were written like real teenagers and I felt sympathy for their situation, I did not connect to them as I would have wanted. Decisions were made and respective characters responded. It is very slow until the last 80% of the book. The plot of The War Outside is character-driven.
